Gifted & Twice Exceptional Assessment

Cognitive assessments for children and teens — understanding learning needs and qualifying for gifted, enrichment, and specialized educational programs.

What This Assessment Measures

A cognitive assessment measures intellectual functioning across domains like verbal reasoning, non-verbal problem-solving, working memory, and processing speed. The result is a detailed picture of how a child thinks and learns — the information families and schools use to make informed decisions about educational programming.

A child doesn't need to be obviously excelling to benefit from an assessment. The goal is clarity about the child's cognitive profile, so supports and programs can be matched to their actual learning needs.

Common Reasons Families Pursue an Assessment

  • Applying for a gifted, enrichment, or specialized educational program
  • Qualifying for an Individualized Program Plan (IPP) or accommodations
  • Understanding a child's cognitive strengths and relative weaknesses
  • Investigating a mismatch between ability and school performance
  • Exploring a possible twice-exceptional (2e) profile

Assessment Process

  • Parent/guardian intake interview
  • Direct cognitive testing with the child
  • Detailed report with home and school recommendations

Twice-Exceptional (2e)

A comprehensive assessment can reveal twice-exceptional profiles: advanced intellectual functioning alongside concurrent learning, developmental, or mental health challenges. This provides insight into relative strengths and weaknesses, helping to create appropriate support plans.

Gifted Assessment FAQ

What test is used for a gifted assessment?

We use widely accepted, standardized measures of intellectual ability administered one-on-one by a Registered Psychologist. These are the measures gifted and enrichment programs in Alberta expect to see; at your intake we'll confirm the specific requirements of the program you're applying to.

What score qualifies a child as gifted?

There is no single universal cut-off. Each program sets its own criteria, usually framed as a percentile or standard-score threshold on a standardized cognitive measure. During the consultation we can discuss the criteria of the specific program you have in mind and whether a full or brief assessment makes sense.

What does 'twice-exceptional' (2e) mean?

Twice-exceptional describes a person who is intellectually gifted and has a co-occurring learning, developmental, or mental-health challenge, such as a gifted child with ADHD or dyslexia. Each profile can mask the other, so 2e often goes unrecognized. A comprehensive assessment can identify both sides of the profile; you can read more in our guide to twice-exceptionality.

How long does a gifted assessment take?

A gifted (cognitive) assessment is our most focused option: an intake interview, direct testing with your child, and a report with recommendations. It is priced separately from comprehensive assessments; see the fee schedule for details.
